AT&T to lock down Apple SIMs in iPad Air 2 and iPad iPad Mini 3
The new iPads of Apple come with a kind of SIM card that allows you to switch carriers. If you are at some place where you think you should switch your carrier, just go to settings and choose the other carrier of your choice. But there is a bad news for you if you are an AT&T customer. AT&T will block this feature the moment you sign up for a month of service.
The report has been confirmed by Apple, “Using Apple SIM, you can choose from different cellular carriers and their various programs. The data plans vary by carrier. For instance, in the United States, you can choose a domestic plan from either Sprint or T-Mobile and also pick an alternate plan from the other carrier as needed. When you choose AT&T on iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, AT&T dedicates Apple SIM to their network only.” Currently there are four top carriers with which Apple SIM is compatible and they are T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T and EE. The last one of the four is the UK based carrier. The liberty to switch between the carriers is an excellent feature of iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. You can choose the carrier that has something to offer you were looking for. There is one thing that should be clearly understood that if AT&T users want to change carriers they will have to get a new Apple SIM from either that provider or Apple. That also means that the carrier is not locking in iPad hardware.
On October 16, the tech giant introduced its universal SIM alongside the iPad Air 2 and Retina iPad 3. It is so far the best SIM of its kind, designed to work across multiple carriers. According to Re/code, an AT&T spokesperson confirmed that in order to switch carriers AT&T customers who use the Apple SIM with AT&T will need a different SIM card.
"With us you can change carriers with this iPad any time you want," he said. "It is an unlocked device. ... All [you] have to do is switch out the SIM in the device so it works on another carrier."
